11×30: Raw Food Review

Hellllooooo October! I can’t think of any better way to welcome a new season and a new month than with a fresh set of goals… and a few lessons from the last set of challenges! I’m sharing 3 big lessons learned from my month of raw in the video above. I’m returning to my ‘normal diet’ for October, with one big exception: no more poultry, red meat or pork. After three months of not eating these meats I neither miss nor want them back in my diet. A very unexpected ‘side effect’ but a great example of learning to listen to your body and what it needs.

Two of my guides for the month… couldn’t have accomplished my raw meal adventures without these beauties!

Raw Food Reads

For the month of October the 11×30 challenges get physical! (And mental!) Time for YOGA! I’m asking for your support along the way! I would LOVE to see your photos, on Instagram and Twitter, using the hashtag #31DaysOfYoga. There will be giveaway in the form of yoga passes (like the use-it-anywhere Passport to Prana) and gear once a week to help motivate both you and me.

I’ll be trying a variety of yoga, from studios to in-home practice, challenging myself to commit to a minimum of 20 minutes of yoga each day. I’ll be tweeting and sharing a pose from my daily practice, after being inspired by last week’s Instagram challenge with Young Female Entrepreneurs (the Friday night Twitter chat with CNN was trending at the top of Twitter – whoooooaaaaa!!).

In addition to video chats … my version of a ‘fireside chat’? … I’ll be re-capping this month’s experience on The Daily Muse as part of their exploration of Matt Cutts’ (of Google fame) TED talk on the topic of trying something new for 30 days. Perfect timing! Are there any big goals that you’re looking to tackle this month or in the last 3 months of this year? Let’s hear ‘em out and support one another along the way!

    I love this!!!!! :-)

I love what you said in the video about not having to define yourself by the way you eat… 98% of the time I eat a completely vegan diet, but sometimes when we go out to eat (especially somewhere with good, whole foods) I just eat vegetarian. It’s the hardest thing to explain to people, who seem to get so invested in what you’re eating – nothing is more awkward than those family gatherings when people are offended that you’re not eating the main meal.

It is hard! People get wrapped in food labels. My friends were fairly understanding during the month but most of them were asking “when is this over..?” and happy for my return to “normal eating”! My family has resigned me as the “crazy Californian” when it comes to eating. You’ll fit in perfectly out here!

  3. We’re doing a similar Yoga Instagram challenge at Grow Soul Beautiful! I’d love to team up- we have a suggested pose list, so you can see everybody doing the same pose each day! http://growsoulbeautiful.com/instagram-yoga-challenge/

Thanks for sharing your experience! Very excited to follow (and join in at points along the way) in your 31 days of yoga.

  5. I agree with Anni above that defining ourselves by our diet isn’t really necessary. Eat what makes your body feel good, and if you occasionally have something that just tastes good – well, that’s okay too!

I love your yoga challenge, but I have a tough time doing it on my own. Are there any videos or other resources you can recommend? Thank you!

    • erin m. says:

It’s absolutely not necessary. And wiggle room is an important part of healthy living, especially when it comes to your mental health!

Yoga – a few of my favorite “on demand” resources are podcasts and livestream from the following: Yoga Journal, Yogis Anonymous, YogaGLO and Tara Stiles’ YouTube channel (she has great videos ~10 min in duration – perfect for the morning). Cheers!

You get a big fat A for effort! Raw is hard and not totally necessary… (personal opinion!) As a fellow Pescatarian, I fully support you! I’m so excited for your #31daysofYoga challenge! Can I send you a pic of me doing a standing bow pose everyday!? That one is my fav! You rock! THANK YOU FOR CONTINUING to INSPIRE! XOXO

Love this! I definitely need some guidance in the yoga department and a little boost to get going. I love a good Vinyasa flow- do you have any recommendations on Youtube videos/channels to get started again?

  8. Sharzad says:

Looks like Miss WellinLA needs to put a Yoga video together! The fans have spoken! Do it! Do it! Do it!

  9. Monique says:

  10. Great Video! Loved watching you and wanted to hand five you for your message! Many people ask “what is your diet” Paleo? Vegan … I am like well basically I focus on WHOLE foods simple! Great insight and I am looking forward to your yoga pose challenge I am in need of some poses and a goal of mine this month is to practice so you will be inspiring me daily :) Love and Shine CourtStar

one of the hardest diets I have ever done is 100% raw. Being confined to a label does exactly that: confines you. I felt guilty when I’d have TEA or warmed something a little bit and that’s absolutely absurd! There’s NO absolute right or wrong in eating; it’s what is right for YOU and your unique body. When you said “I failed” I felt so connected to that feeling… there is no “failed” when it comes to eating. Personally, I think the key is getting as many beautiful foods into your diet as you can each day, while still allowing room for heavier, more indulgent, luxurious foods here and there. I LOVE fish and love the way I feel after eating it. It’s almost as if, because the fish swims, it flows through you differently than huge other (land) animals. Just a silly thought :) Love you and proud of your exploration and strength! Even more proud of your ability to listen to your own body and intuition which, in the end, is the most important skill of all.
